What is TMJ?
TMJ is a classification of any disorder of the temporomandibular joint. This is where your jaw meets your skull. There are two joints on either side of your skull directly in front of your earlobe. You use this joint every day when you talk, eat, and do anything that requires your mouth to open. When this joint is not functioning properly, we get symptoms.
Where Does TMJ Come From?
These symptoms come from a misaligned joint and/or muscle adhesions in the different jaw muscles. This can be caused by an injury to the jaw, jaw clenching or grinding, or repetitive stress from eating and other activities that require the jaw to be moving. It can also be caused by arthritis to the joint itself. Common symptoms are muscle tightness, jaw clicking, stiffness, locked jaw, tooth pain, and jaw pain.
Chiropractic Can Help TMJ
TMJ can be treated very easily and effectively with a Chiropractic adjustment. The TMJ joint can be adjusted back into the right place which will help relieve muscle tension and pain quickly. Chiropractors will also assess the cause of the TMJ so they can help you make lifestyle changes to prevent the TMJ issues from returning. Stress is a common factor that leads to grinding and clenching. When these habits are removed, TMJ issues often resolve as well.
Chiropractic care is very helpful for patients who have tried many different methods to relieve their TMJ with no success. Chiropractic care is a non-invasive form of treatment that involves no medications or side effects. Chiropractic techniques are gentle enough to use on children and effective enough to help adults.
