Subluxation is an important term to know in the Chiropractic field. It describes what happens when one of the vertebrae of your spine moves out of position. The word is derived from the Latin words meaning “slightly” (sub) and “to dislocate” (luxate). A subluxation creates pressure and stress on the spinal nerves and surrounding muscles, creating a whole host of problems. Because the spinal nerves extend to the entire body and its organs, a subluxation causes an imbalance in the body’s normal processes. If left uncorrected, this can cause more and more damage and over time degeneration can set in.
Where do Subluxations come from?
Subluxations can occur in a variety of ways, primarily because of unique circumstances or regular actions. While they can be caused by specific, one-time traumatic events, they can also be caused by your regular actions.
Traumatic events that can cause subluxations may include:
- Car accident
- Athletic injuries
- Birth trauma
- A fall
- A sudden jar
Regular actions that can cause subluxations may include:
- Improper sleeping position
- Poor posture
- Incorrect lifting processes
- Daily actions such as standing or sitting
In either case, the subluxation can cause a variety of problems and needs to be corrected.
Subluxation of the spine can cause many symptoms, including headache, back pain, neck pain, tightness and tension, limited use of motion, and more. It is important to understand that a subluxation may have no symptoms at all and may cause no pain but that does not mean it’s not affecting your body and health. A subluxation creates tension, stress, and dis-ease within your body.
The solution to subluxations is simple: regular Chiropractic care. As you can see from the list above, subluxations can occur easily and on a daily basis. It’s important to correct them through regular Chiropractic adjustments.
